The Vine & Brew Re Grand Opening!

Written by Aimee West

vine and brew article

The Vine and Brew in Okemos is excited to show off their new expansion, with events all weekend long! Whether you enjoy drinking wine, beer or both Vine and Brew has fun events for all.
When locals heard that the party store Blue Front was closing, more than a few of us started the “nothing gold can stay” laments that soon turned into much reminiscing about the past and the things that used to be here, but are no more. The building on the corner of Packard and State can be traced back to 1908, when it was listed as being a news depot. It later became a cigar store, and in the 1920s became known as the Blue Front. The reason for the name is lost to the ages, but we do know that a man named Ray E. Collins bought the Blue Front Cigar Store in 1927 and made the place legendary.

Beer Store Review: Willow Mercantile in Cadillac

When it comes to writing an article like this, I’m usually focused on something in the Grand Rapids area, but after a random stop at Willow Mercantile this summer, I had to take the time to take some pictures and highlight them in an article. What a great place!

8 Degrees Plato in Ferndale: Michigan’s Only Strictly Beer Store

“What guy doesn’t dream of owning a beer store?” – Tim Costello, owner of 8 Degrees Plato

When 8 Degrees Plato opened in Ferndale on October 7, 2011, it filled a desperate niche for many of southeast Michigan’s craft beer lovers. As Michigan’s only strictly beer store – they don’t sell liquor or lottery – 8 Degrees exists to educate and indoctrinate its customers into the craft brewing universe. Owner Tim Costello spent 25 years on the road as a stand-up comic, and whenever he’d return home to Ann Arbor, he would invariably bring with him as many regional beers as he could find, to share with his family and friends. And from much sampling and experimentation (why can’t all of our homework be like that!) grew his love of craft beer and the genesis of an idea for a new business.

The Collective Tap: Detroit's First Craft Beer Store that Focuses on Enjoyment, Education, and Engagement!

Here is further evidence that while it still has a long way to go, the long-beleaguered city of Detroit is indeed turning around. The Collective Tap, a new craft beer store and tasting room, will be soon be opening its doors as the first craft beer retailer in the city. Focused on "enjoyment, education, and engagement", The Collective Tap will be much more than a beer store. With their main focus centering on Belgian and English beers, they will have a first class tasting bar where customers can sample products prior to purchasing them. Also, various classes and events will be held on different styles of beers and how, for new craft beer drinkers, to find one they like. In addition, the store's owner, Emily Miller, is Detroit's first female Cicerone Certified Beer Server.
