Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery in Ypsilanti is hosting the sixth annual Rat Fest homebrew competition

When the owners Matt and Rene Greff began home brewing many years before 1995 when the Arbor Brewing Company opened they never imaged an event of this size taking place. Join us January 25th from 2-5 pm at the Arbor Brewing Company for the 6th Annual Rat Fest.
If you don't know what the Rat Fest is then let me say this is not an event to be missed. When Rat Fest first started it was a competition between brewery staff and members of the Ann Arbor Brewer's Guild. The goal was to brew 24 beers in a single 24 hour period on two systems. Not an easy feat. What started as a small friendly competition between two groups has now turned into a large friendly competition with seven clubs joining us this year: The AABG Hopheads, AABG Greybeards, Craft Beer in Mi, Brighton Home Brew Club, Detroit Draft Divas, Motor City Mashers, The Sons of Liberty and The Ugly Mug.

The Rat Fest is where local southeast brew clubs can hone their skills and have some fun at the same time. The competition takes place on the Rat Pad which is a 10 gallon brewing system. Each of these clubs will have to create four beers in this 24 hour period.

Since this is a group that likes to 'up the ante' the ABC Microbrewery has come up with a new challenge. Not only do you need to brew 4 beers in a single 24 hour period but one of them must be a sour. When you are creating a sour or tart tasting beer you are allowing the wild yeast or good bacteria to be introduced to the brew.

This event is always a good time with the brewers putting on a great show. Mark your calender for the 6th Annual Rat Fest Homebrew Competition on January 25th from 2-5pm. Purchase your tickets early for $35 or at the door for $40, each ticket includes a commemorative tasting glass, beer samples and snacks. Buy them early either in person at the microbrewery or over the phone by calling 734-480-2739.
