Vander Fest is the annual fall festival of Spring Lake’s Vander Mill Cidery bringing craft breweries and cideries together each year for an amazing evening of food, fun, and music. 2014 marked the 5th year for this event, and the continual fine-tuning from year to year has paid off with this year featuring the perfect balance of beer, food, cider and entertainment. A variety of outdoor food vendors competed this year with the Mill’s own very busy kitchen. While the cold and rain couldn’t keep fest-goers away from the outdoor tented event, inside the mill proved busier than ever with many seeking temporary shelter from the weather.

Birmingham crowds will clamor for more when The Bird and The Bread offers up its first Halloween events later this month – titled Beer, Fire and Brimstone in the ELM Room. Enjoy the flavors of fall with a beer tasting event fit to cater to all tastes, and sights to suit the season. This event takes place from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014 at The Bird & The Bread’s ELM Room, 210 S Old Woodward Avenue in downtown Birmingham. The cost is $35 per person ($5 off for those in costume).

Vander Mill Cider Mill in Spring Lake recently hosted the monthly homebrew club meetup of the Muskegon Ottawa Brewers and I thought I would take advantage of the opportunity to get a peek at the latest goings-on at the mill. Product manager Jay Blanchard graciously provided a tour of the facility from apple press to the canning line that currently accounts for approximately 40% of the mill’s sales, including the recently launched Ginger Peach cider in cans.

The SOLD OUT 3rd Annual Traverse City Microbrew & Music Festival Sat. Feb. 11, in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons, was AWESOME! Originally the Fest was planned for Old Towne in TC but the return to the site of the summer Porterhouse event was a blessing and a perfect combo to the annual VASA ski weekend.
