Now in its second year, Frankfort Beer Week is a weeklong series of beer and food-themed events happening in the Lake Michigan coastal city of Frankfort and the neighboring village of Elberta. A celebration of northern Michigan’s growing craft beer industry and established food culture, Frankfort Beer Week is scheduled for October 5-10, 2015.
Nearly 15 Frankfort and Elberta businesses including Stormcloud Brewing Company, Dinghy's Restaurant & Bar, The Hotel Frankfort, and Crescent Bakery will celebrate Frankfort Beer Week and all that is great about craft beer in Michigan. Events include Beer Dinners, Special Small Batch Beer Releases, a Homebrewers Competition, Beer-Infused Food Creations, a History of Local Beer presentation, Tasting and Pairing Workshops, a Cooking with Beer Class and more.

“Frankfort Beer Week really brings our lakeside communities together,” says Frankfort-Elberta Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Joanne Bartley. “With autumn’s colors and leisurely pace an irresistible draw for visitors and a much-anticipated time of year for locals, it’s ideal to celebrate the season with great beer and fantastic food. Frankfort and Elberta businesses have embraced Frankfort Beer Week as an opportunity to share the bounty of northwest lower Michigan.”

Year two of Frankfort Beer Week includes many new activities and events, including:

  • History of Local Beer Presentation - Jason Kasdorf, General Manager of 7 Monks Taproom in Traverse City, will lead a presentation on the history of beer in northern Michigan. Jason is a Cicerone Certified Beer Server, a long-running advocate for craft brewing, and founder of 7 Monks Taproom, named one of DRAFT Magazine's "100 Best Beer Bars in America" in 2014 and 2015. Jason’s presentation will take place Tuesday, October 6 at Benzie Shores District Library in downtown Frankfort.
  • Cooking Up A Storm Class - Oliver Art Center in downtown Frankfort will host a Cooking with Beer class with instruction led by Stormcloud Brewing Company Executive Chef Joe Meyers. Participants will learn how to use Stormcloud's “Belgian Inspired, Michigan Made” beer to create rich and delicious flavors in recipes at home. Cooking Up A Storm is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7.
  • Beer versus Wine Showdown & Dinner - Beer may be the guest of honor at Frankfort Beer Week but it will have to prove its moxie during a tasting showdown with another favorite northern Michigan libation: Wine. Chimney Corners Resort on the shore of beautiful Crystal Lake will host a six-course tapas dinner paired with both beer and wine. Attendees decide which drink pairs best with each plate, beer or wine?
  • Small Batch Beer Releases - Two area restaurants will host lower Michigan breweries for exclusive releases of their small batch beers. Dinghy's Restaurant & Bar will host Rockford Brewing Company of Rockford and The Hotel Frankfort welcomes Big Rapids’ Cranker’s Brewery.

Additional Frankfort Beer Week events include a beer tent at Frankfort’s annual Fall Festival on Betsie Bay, a Harvest Beer Tasting Workshop at Frankfort’s Stormcloud Brewing Company, a homebrewers competition, a beer movie, and beer-infused food creations at many Frankfort and Elberta area restaurants.

“It’s a great week for beer!” says Stormcloud Brewing Company co-owner Rick Schmitt. “In many countries, September and October have traditionally been months to celebrate beer and the end of the harvest season. It makes sense to continue that tradition here in our food and craft beer destination.”

Schmitt continues, “With Frankfort’s Fall Festival on Saturday coinciding with the conclusion of Frankfort Beer Week, we sustain that tradition of community celebration here in downtown Frankfort and across the bay in Elberta,” says Schmitt. “And it’s a great occasion to showcase our ‘Belgian Inspired’ harvest ales and invite other Michigan breweries to do the same.”

The weeklong Frankfort Beer Week celebration culminates with an Oktoberfest celebration at Stormcloud Brewing Company on Saturday, October 10th beginning at 5pm. Award-winning singer/songwriter Karisa Wilson will round out the celebration with a live performance at Stormcloud.
