Recap of 2014 Winter Beer Festival

This year’s Winter Beer Festival at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park was another one for the record books. A record number of breweries, a record number of beers, and of course, once again selling out in a record time of just a few hours. For an epic drinking excursion of this magnitude, a degree of pre-fest sustenance is desirable, and I found mine to be had at Brewery Vivant’s Brewer’s Big Breakfast. Menu items ranging from Chicken & Waffles, PB&J Crepe Cake, or signature Duck Nachos were paired up with Monk-Mosa’s (OJ & Farmhand,) plus all of Vivant’s speciality beer fest beers including the Love Shadow barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout made for a great head start for the big event.

One of Michigan’s largest producing breweries, New Holland Brewing Co, had its humble beginnings over 15 years ago literally operating out of garage in a small industrial section outside of the downtown area.

Vander Mill has stepped it up once more for this year’s annual Fall celebration Vander Fest. Warm weather cooperated with a great lineup including some of Lakeshore’s best breweries, a dozen cideries, great food options, and amazing live music complete with laser show consistent with the best of previous year’s celebrations but also offering plenty new.

Our Brewing may have had a bit of rocky start when they first opened one year ago, having to scale back hours due to beer shortages and even temporarily closing while boosting production to meet overwhelming demand.

Downtown Holland takes Beer Hounds on a Groovewalk

Following last spring’s enjoyable Groovewalk, for the fall version, I went ahead and booked a hotel (the CityFlats) for the night so as to be able to more fully enjoy the experience. I recommend looking CityFlats up if ever looking for a place to stay in Holland, they do a great job. Also, CityFlats own CitySēn Lounge was one of the participating locations on the Groovewalk, being both the 1st and final stop of the GrooveXpress  bus which made the rounds of all 11 locations from 9 PM until 1:30 AM.

Downtown Holland Groovewalk features bands, bars, and breweries

Downtown Holland’s Groovewalk featured 13 bands at 13 venues and including great local breweries and beer bars and a variety of both national and Michigan acts. The cost for a wrist-band was $15 and basically served as the cover charge for all of the locations plus free rides on the GrooveXpress (if preferred, although most of the locations were in easy walking distance also for those who preferred a pub crawl.) Live musicians entertained patrons while on opting for rides on the bus.

Steve Berthel from New Holland Brewing Company

For the last few years, the Michigan Brewers Guild has watched their annual Winter Beerfest grow. Every year has seen the ticket count grow higher, the grounds pushed farther, and the response? Far exceeding the expectations of the Guild over and over again.

Winter Beerfest 2013 Most Wanted List

Winter Beerfest 2013 Most Wanted List

There are many different factors that influence this list, primarily of which is dependent on audience demand; who has the biggest lines and draws the biggest crowds. Another factor is beer offerings, what these breweries are bringing to the festival that create a huge demand among those attending.
