Downtown Manistee’s 3rd Annual Hops and Props on the river was a weekend long celebration of beer, boats, music and food. The festivities began Friday evening with a kickoff reception at the Boathouse grill, with events throughout the day on Saturday and wrapping up on Sunday morning with the Boater’s Brunch in the lobby of the Ramsdell Inn. Featured events included a beer tent, art and boat shows, and a series of tap takeovers throughout the downtown area.
The beer tasting event began at 1 PM in the streets of downtown Manistee. (VIP ticket holders were able to get in an hour earlier and included lunch with the brewers.) Over 50 different craft beers from over a dozen different breweries were represented. Bottled and canned product available for tasting included selections from Short’s, Saugatuck Brewing, Blackrocks and Jolly Pumpkin whereas as a good selection of taps were also on hand including Tapistry, Cheboygan Brewing Co, Arcadia, Kuhnhenn, Brewery Vivant and Brewery Terra Firma. Wine, cider, and mead were also available for tasting including hard cider from Virtue and Sietsema and mead from Bardic Wells.

Following the beer tasting, downtown restaurants featured tap takeovers in conjunction with the event. I made a stop out at Blue Fish Kitchen and was able to enjoy some Great Lakes seafood paired with beer selections from Founders and Right Brain. Other participating restaurants and breweries were as follows:

  • TJ’s Pub: Kuhnhenn Brewery, Bell’s & Virtue
  • Boathouse: Brewery Vivant & Dark Horse
  • River Street Station: New Holland & Saugatuck
  • 522 Pub and Grill: Cheboygan Brewery
  • Stu's Pub: Arbor Brew & Griffin Claw

Music for the event was provided by Keith Scott, the John Archambault Band and the Dragon Wagon Band. Be sure to check out the Visit Manistee website (http://www.visitmanistee.com) for more great upcoming events planned such as the Halloween-themed Boos Brews and Brats scheduled for October 25th.
