What began a decade ago with a handful of Michigan brewers and a little over 100 attendees has grown into one of northern Michigan’s Memorial Day Weekend traditions. The Michigan Beer and Brat Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary on Saturday, May 23, 4-8pm (VIP event beginning 3pm).
The anniversary celebration will attract more than 30 breweries from across the state and thousands of craft beer lovers to the base of Crystal Mountain’s slopes. More than two dozen brats from local markets will be available as will upwards of 90 different Michigan beers. Eleven breweries are set to participate in this year’s Brewer’s Special Reserve Trail in which a featured beer is released in limited quantity every 30 minutes including
two during the VIP hour (3-4pm). Sweetwater Blues Band will open for The Rock Show who takes the stage at the Clipper Chairlift from 5:30-8pm.

Tickets are available with a special VIP hour from 3-4pm. Cost is $40 (advanced online registration required by May 22) to enter an hour before the general public and includes 10 tokens, a commemorative glass and tshirt (while supplies last). General admission is $25 ($30 day of the event) and includes five tokens and a commemorative glass. Additional tokens will be available during the event for $2, a full beer or brat costing two tokens and a halfbeer or halfbrat for one token. Visit crystalmountain.com/beerfest to purchase tickets online.

Adding to the energy of the event this year will be electric vehicles from Tesla, GM, BMW, Nissan and Cadillac on display alongside the MGs, Jags and Triumphs of the British Car Club that has become a traditional attraction. Earlier in the day from 10am-2pm, Stormcloud Brewing (Frankfort) will be on the second hole of the Mountain Ridge course hosting special contests with their own and other craft beers available at Kinlochen Plaza and oncourse beverage carts.

Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start to summer which means it’s opening weekend for Crystal’s most popular attractions. The Park at Water’s Edge, adventure course, climbing wall and Crystal Coaster Alpine Slide will operate Saturday-Monday. The North Mitten Half Marathon & 10K begins at 8am on Sunday, May 24. Also, on Sunday (5-9pm) the Park at Water’s Edge hosts a pool party with a DJ, games and other family fun activities. Overnight packages from $149 per adult, per night, are available including a VIP festival package. Visit crystalmountain.com to book online or
