The west side of Grand Rapids continues to foster new growth and development with The Black Heron Kitchen & Bar being the latest venture to opens it’s doors. Located on the corner of Sumner Ave and Bridge St NW, this new restaurant sits kitty corner to the upcoming location of New Holland Brewing’s Grand Rapids location now under development. My wife and I were recently invited to attend a sneak preview of the Black Heron along with the Grand Rapids-based food community group EatGR and jumped at the opportunity. Our visit include a complimentary champagne toast which was a nice touch to complement the soft opening.
The Black Heron was started by Laura and Seth Porter who also happen to be the masterminds behind the Michigan Beer Blog, so it should be no surprise that restaurant features an emphasis on Michigan-based food and beverage. Expectations were high in regards to the starting tap list, and I was not disappointed. The bar features an impressive 36 taps and several specialty beers were tapped for the grand opening week including New Holland’s Le Peloton, Founders KBS, and Bell’s The Wild One. Also impressive was the cider selection which included 6 taps featuring many newcomers of the Michigan craft cider scene including Ridge Cider Co. of Grant, a cider from Short’s new Starcut line, as well as selections from Hudsonville’s new Farmhaus cidery.

Featured on the food menu is a selection of handmade sausages, appetizers including poutine options, soups, salads, and entrees including burgers, lake trout, and smoked quail. I enjoyed the vegetarian cauliflower “steak” with roasted corn on toast for the side. Hand made ice cream is one of the features on the dessert menu. The bar also features a full selection of cocktails including many Michigan-based spirits. A brunch menu is also in the works. The Black Heron is currently open 7 days a week opening at 4 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and closing at 10 a.m. on Sundays, Midnight on Monday through Wednesday, and 2 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
