For food, the LeLu Cafe specializes in ‘farm to table tacos and burritos.’ Literally every ingredient in these meals is local and fresh. The tacos and burritos come in sets of one, two, or three, with the option of choosing vegetarian, carnitas, chicken, black bean, or freshly caught fish. Small appetizers are also available, and I highly recommend dabbling in the chips and flight of salsas. There are salsa varieties to appease any palate; including a corn salsa, pico de gallo, mango habanero, chipotle, salsa verde, and roasted habanero. On Saturday nights, there are special plated dinners available, which generally consist of four courses and two glasses of beer or wine of your own choosing. That runs at a mere $30 per person.
Most importantly, cookies are placed at the bar, with a recommendation about which beer would go best with the specific variety. And keep your eyes peeled, because if you’re lucky, the owner’s dog may come bustling through. It is little touches like this that make this cafe so fun and heartwarming to visit.
Attached to this unique cafe is a tasting room for MotoVino Cellars, whose wine is made exclusively with Leelanau County grapes. Above LeLu Cafe is a very quaint inn, which could be a necessity. Northport is full of great beer and wine to try, in addition to offering incredible sight- seeing adventures and water excursions. Make a full weekend of it and enjoy all the local ingredients that Leelanau can offer.
