If you’ve not paid a visit to Kalamazoo in a couple years, a lot has been going on with their local brewery scene. While staples like Bell’s and Olde Peninsula brewpub continue to thrive, the biggest news is of course Arcadia Brewing Company’s recent move from Battle Creek to Kalamazoo with a new productions facility, pub, and restaurant. But while this maybe the most visible and apparent recent addition to Kalamazoo brewing community, behind the scenes another craft brewing revolution is current in progress at the nanobrewery scale with the introduction of several new smaller breweries with brewing systems of 3 barrels and less. To put this in perspective, Bell’s recent expansions have put them in the capacity to brew 500,000 barrels or more a year.
Tibbs Brewing Company opened in December 2013 as part of an explosion of Kalamazoo nanobreweries which also include Rupert’s, Gonzo’s Biggdogg, and Boatyard Brewing Company. Tibbs is located on South Burdick in downtown Kalamazoo, right next door to the State Theatre. Tibbs Brewing currently offer bar snacks along with a variety of beers, some of the current beer choices include the following:
  • the flagship “Hell-Jen Belgian Triple”
  • “G’Morning Coffee Stout” with Something’s Brewing coffee
  • “Citra Your Ass Down IPA”
  • “For Richer or Porter” with hints of chocolate and coffee
  • “Grapefruits of Wrath” Pale Ale with an insane amount of grapefruits added post-fermentation

Tibbs is including a rotating nitro tap as part of their current offerings. Food options include pretzel bites, chicken pesto pizza, fries, and nachos as well as a weekly collaboration with downtown Kalamazoo’s The Cupcake ZOO featuring a selection of cupcakes using different Tibbs beers as an ingredient. Tibbs is currently open Wednesday through Sunday with hours from 4 PM until midnight during the week, Fridays 4 PM - 1 AM, Saturday 2 PM - 1 AM, and Sunday 12 PM - 6 PM.
