Cool Classy Old German Bar and Bierkeller in Ann Arbor

When the Revolution comes—and it will come my brothers and sisters—we will need to rely on bars and brewpubs for meetings, information exchanges and espionage. The Old German is the perfect place for headquarters—kind of dark, downstairs, extremely comfortable, friendly and has excellent beers. (Why yes! I have seen Inglorious Bastards and I do count to three using my thumb and so I probably will get shot first).
The bar is located downstairs of the Grizzly Peak at the corner of Washington and Ashley in Ann Arbor. The dark hued interior features beautiful dark paneled wood to create a comfortable atmosphere. There’s even a bear! The standard beers from Grizzly Peak are available (pale ale, red, porter, and so on) as are some beers unique to the Old German. Boyfriend Ken had the Blah Blah Ginger beer and I had the bock. I may have noted before that I am not always a fan of ginger beer because, well, I don’t care for ginger and because it too often completely overwhelms the taste of the ale. This beer was extremely well balanced and smooth. You could definitely taste the ginger but you didn’t forget it was a beer! The bock absolutely knocked my socks off! Sweet, malty and smooth. This week, a few new beers were released including a WeizenHopf and a hoppy lager that features Liberty, Mt. Hood and Crystal hops.

The food also reflects the “Germanness” of the pub. We had the charcuterie plate (and I had a spirited discussion with our bartender about how to pronounce this) that included liverwurst (Mom would be so proud of me for eating this), dark bread, two kinds of cheese and pickled onions. Ken enjoyed the chicken pesto bratwurst and I had the German meat patties (it’s funny because my name is Patti!). You can also choose from a hasenpfeffer sandwich, Bavarian meatloaf, latkes/potato pancakes and even a Barvarian bahn mi!

If you are looking for a cool place to enjoy a good beer, head down the stairs to the Old German. Even if you never need to plan a revolution there, you can still have a good time!
