Northern Oak- Bringing Craft Beer to Holly

Written by Erik Smith

Add Holly to the list of Michigan cities that now have their own hometown microbrewery with September’s opening on Northern Oak Brewery. Situated with near downtown Holly, with a gorgeous view of Bevins Lake, the brewery is the realization of a decade-old dream of co-owner Ed Kruppa.

Grand Ledge sits above the Grand River and is only about 13 miles west of downtown Lansing. With the sandstone ledges to climb, the historic Opera House, and its downtown area to explore, the city of Grand Ledge has a lot going for it. Next time you visit, stop in Sanctuary Spirits nestled just on the edge of town on Saginaw Highway. It is located in an old historic church and is the first microbrewery in Grand Ledge.

Finally, a touch of history is coming back to the Lansing area. After a long hiatus, Lansing Brewing Company is back and ready for a fresh 100-plus year run. “Our original brewery started brewing beer in 1898. We supplied beer to those that built Lansing,” is a quote on the wall and we are excited to see them brewing beer for a new generation of Lansing workers.

Ellison Brewery and Spirits is a true hidden gem in the East Lansing area. Located on Dawn Rd., nestled among a few industrial buildings, Ellison is housed in a building with no name that over the years has been used by the Lansing State Journal for a distribution center, and warehouse space for many others. Eric Elliott and his crew have given new life to this 10,000 square foot building and have created a warm and relaxing atmosphere inside.

oddside expansion article

2015 is shaping up to be another great year for Odd Side Ales brewery located in the Story & Clark Piano Factory in downtown Grand Haven. Not only has the brewery been celebrating it’s 5th-year anniversary this year, but also has recently relocated the production facility, doubling the size, and expanded and remodeled the pub location as well. When the pub first opened in March of 2010, all of the production was done on-site. Increased demand first lead to off-site production in 2012 which included their own bottling line. This represents the 3rd location for production in Odd Side Ales’ 5+ years with the original pub brewery still in use for brewing small batch releases.
