Gonzo's Biggdogg Brewing is Set for End of October Opening

South West Michigan is becoming a destination for beer lovers. In 2012 Grand Rapids made its mark when it when it was voted Beer City USA. And then lightning struck twice in Michigan.
Not only did Grand Rapids retain the title of Beer City USA but Kalamazoo take the second seat, knocking Asheville, North Carolina down the ranks. This is a huge testament to the growth and interest in beers coming out of the great state of Michigan.

There are very good reasons for the cities to be where they are now. It is the growth of craft beer in the state and in these cities as well. There are some great breweries coming in to Kalamazoo that are part of the spirit that is craft beer. One of the breweries expected to open in the fall of 2013 is Gonzo's Bigg Dogg Brewery.

After searching out other locations in South West Michigan, Greg "Gonzo" Haner found a home in downtown Kalamazoo in what used to be a showroom for Orrin B Hayes (their Mazda Showroom moved to a different lot). The large and open spaces of the showroom made the perfect home of the new 15 barrel brew system that will be part of the brewery/ tasting room.

During the visit the brewery was in various stages of build out. Their brew system is now in place but they were working on waterlines still. The beer cooler that will house the serving tanks was in the finishing stages. The 30 seat bar is being finished with wood from a barn in Northern Michigan.

The management team of this enterprise includes Greg Haner as brewer, Michael Martin as chef, and Brian Hill as the General Manager. They each bring unique elements into the melting pot of what is shaping up to be a great addition to the line up of beers coming out of Michigan.

For those who are part of the process everyday it can feel like it will never be done. But little by little there are changes happening to the space. Soon we will have a new place to visit and enjoy a cold Michigan beer.
