Spelling Bee(r) is a unique event that was hosted by the B.O.B. on Wednesday July 15th in conjunction with DrinkGR as a benefit for the Grand Rapids Public Library. Modelled after a traditional spelling bee, the Spelling Bee(r) challenged contestants to drink a beer along with each spelling attempt. The event also featured a special brewmaster’s challenge for the newly coveted Golden Paddle award which included participants from 57 Brew Pub, Hopcat, Cedar Springs Brewing Co., Grand Rapids Brewing Co., B.O.B.’s Brewery, and Pike 51 Brewing Co.
The event was preceded by a silent auction which included items such as Summer Beer Fest tickets and a package including bombers of Founders Sweet Repute and Mango Magnifico. The B.O.B.’s own executive chef provided a barbecue buffet while B.O.B.’s Brewery offered their own beers including a limited tapping of the popular Peanut Butter Porter as well as the seasonal release Tangerine Trees. DrinkGR’s Mark Curtis introduced the event with Comedian Stu McCallister and friends hosting the spelling bee and warming up the crowd.

Attendees were invited to participate in the public portion of the spelling bee which included Summer Beer Fest tickets among the prizes. This was followed up with local brewmasters being challenged to spell brewing terms with the Golden Paddle being awarded to brewmaster Jeff Williams of Hudsonville’s Pike 51 Brewing Co. DrinkGr will also teamed up recently with I’m a Beer Hound for their August 20 Meetup at Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery & Supply in Ada which included door prizes and a special tapping of the collaborative Beer Hound Brown.
