Kalamazoo’s One Well Brewing will be tapping the beer at it's tap room on Friday, July 22. The tap room is located at 4213 Portage St., Kalamazoo, MI 49001
There’s a group of brewers in West Michigan with a mission to open a brewery that produces amazing beer while operating on the cooperative principles of democracy, equal ownership, non-discrimination, environmental consciousness, education, living wages for workers, and concern for their community. It’s a tall order, but the folks at High Five Co-op Brewery are sure they’re up to it.

As they work toward opening Michigan’s first cooperative brewery, they are making friends along the way through innovative partnerships. One such effort is a collaboration with the Kalamazoo Humane Society and One Well Brewing.

“We are currently in our investment phase, trying to raise awareness and excitement for a community owned brewery,” says Terry Davis, High Five’s Vice President. “As such we don't yet have the ability to produce or sell beer ourselves. That’s why we are collaborating with established breweries in the area and benefitting local non-profit organizations.”

A co-op is an autonomous association of people who voluntarily cooperate for their mutual social, economic, and cultural benefit. In High Five’s case that mutual benefit is beer. They are currently accepting lifetime memberships and offering investment shares, which earn dividends. Regardless of investment levels, all owner-members have one vote in the business dealings of the co-op.

Ideally, High Five want to pour their first pint in 2017, if not sooner. Their immediate goal of raising a minimum of $100,000 up to $250,000 will determine how quickly they can begin full operation, which will eventually include a brewery, taproom, and a restaurant.

High Five has previously collaborated with B.O.B.’s Brewery, Final Gravity Brewing Co., Grand Rapids Brewing Company, Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery & Supply, Harmony Brewing Company, HopCat, The Mitten Brewing Co., Rockford Brewing Company, and White Flame Brewing Co.
