Harmony to celebrate 2 year anniversary Saturday February 1st with plans to expand into West Grand Rapids

Just two short years ago in February marked the grand opening of Harmony Brewing Company in Eastown Grand Rapids.
I remember my first visit to the brewery well as my first review for I’m a Beer Hound. The sign was not even up yet on the building but I knew I was in the right spot recognizing Erik, a bartender from Odd Side Ales leaving the premises, representing well the support local breweries often show each other especially when just getting started. I can’t speak for others, but I can say at the time I certainly wasn’t prepared for the whirlwind of exponential brewery growth that followed culminating in Grand Rapids recent overwhelming recognition through this past year as “Beer City U.S.A.”

For 2014, the owners of Harmony Brewing Company are preparing to expand in a big way with the Eastown location currently brewing at full capacity and looking at a seemingly insatiable and continually increasing demand for locally craft beer in West Michigan. Brother Jackson and Barry Van Dyke along with their sister Heather Van Dyke- Titus have started a new project on Bridge St. in West Grand Rapids with the purchase of a 3-story Bavarian style building which they plan to install a 10 BBL brewhouse. The building was built back in 1908 as the Rauser Quality Sausage Company  and will be much more than just a “Harmony West,” as the intent is to incorporate this history into the design and menu for the new location, while also giving a nod to the building’s most recent home to the Little Mexico restaurant.

Needless to say, fans of Harmony Brewing Company have plenty to celebrate for this year’s 2-year anniversary to be celebrated on Saturday, February 1st. The brewery will be commemorating the date with both cake and the tapping of their “Birthday Barley Wine” featuring Hopyards of Kent hops. I plan to stop by and celebrate with them myself, bringing the 2014 Beer City “Pizza and Beer” Beer Hound tour in for a mandatory stop in the early afternoon. After all, not only does Harmony brew great beer but I can also recall from my many visits over the last two years, makes some of the best pizza to be found around.
