Five Michigan breweries located near the shores of Lake Michigan will collaborate to celebrate beer and music as a kick off for July as Michigan Craft Beer Month.
New Holland Brewing Company is hosting a collaborative brew at their Pub on 8th in downtown Holland, known for brewing exclusively with Michigan-grown ingredients. An expanded brewing crew, including brewers from New Holland, Old Boys’ Brewhouse, Lake Charlevoix Brewing, Rare Bird Brewpub and Big Hart Brewing, will make “Mashpaddle” and take the beer and the brewers on a tour along the lakeshore to kick off Fourth of July and Michigan Craft Beer Month.

The brew crew includes several musicians, who have formed “Mashpaddle”—a limited-edition band, including Lake Charlevoix’s Adam Engelman on guitar, New Holland’s Steve “Bert” Berthel on pedal steel, Jesse Jett on vocals and songwriting and The Beervangelist Fred Bueltmann on bass and sousaphone.

The tour is a series of events, visiting each of the collaboration brewpubs, along with special performances by “Mashpaddle” scheduled between anchor sets by the The Strapping Owls - Live Wire Soul—a trio that includes Bueltmann, as well as veteran musicians, Nicholas Barron and Larry Beers.

The tour is supported by Michigan Brewers Guild (MBG) as part of its developing Great Beer State Concert Series and MI Local Hops in Williamsburg, a local hop farm and processing facility located in Williamsburg.

The Mashpaddle: Lake Michigan Brewers’ Collaboration Tour schedule includes:

  • Wednesday, June 29 (7-11pm) – Old Boys' Brewhouse, Spring Lake

  • Oct. 21-22 8th Annual Detroit Fall Beer Festival @ Eastern Market, Detroit
  • Feb. 26-27 12th Annual Winter Beer Festival @ Fifth Third Ballpark, Comstock Park (Grand Rapids)

The Michigan Brewers Guild was formed in 1997 and held its first festival in July 1998. Today, the Guild hosts four festivals dedicated exclusively to Michigan craft beer produced by its more than 200 member breweries.

The association is a network of innovative and passionate brewers that serves as the recognized advocate for the Michigan craft beer industry. The mission of the Michigan Brewers Guild is to promote and protect the Michigan craft beer industry with an overarching goal to help craft beer acquire 20% of the market by 2025.

Michigan’s thriving brewing industry conservatively contributes more than $144 million in wages with a total economic contribution of more than $277 million. In terms of overall number breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs, Michigan ranks #5 in the nation – thus supporting its claim as “The Great Beer State.”
