Founders has decided to shake things up again for 2014 with the year’s first Backstage Release.
While previous year’s releases have lead to great speculation as to exactly which taproom speciality will be next to get the royal treatment, the new Smoked Porter was born as an experimental batch on Founders new 3 barrel pilot system. The brewery was so impressed with the results that the batch graduated from experiment to legendary status with a quick transition to bottle release.

While past year’s releases have seen distribution outside of Michigan as well as being ticketed releases, for Smoked Porter only the kegs will see distribution outside Michigan. The bottles will be distributed only in Michigan, and first come / first serve at the company store with a 4-bottle limit and $10 per bottle. Founders is already widely-regarded for their flagship porter, and this new release is set apart with the prominently featured beech wood–smoked barley and oak-smoked wheat malt for very unique experience. The beer clocks in at a very drinkable 8% ABV and also features prominent chocolate malts in the mix being Founders first ever smoked beer release.

Founders promises at least two more Backstage Releases for 2014, as well as some big surprises for Grand Rapids in March for this year’s KBS release.  Also new for 2014 was the Founders Firkin Freezout, a free event that was on Saturday February 15th with 50 firkins on tap.
