Founders Brewing Company | Curmudgeon's Better Half

On Monday, February 13th, a day prior to Valentine's Day, the tap room at Founders opened at it's usual 11 AM. However, this day was anything like a normal slow paced Monday work day at the brewery as twelve hundred bottles of the latest “Backstage Series” beer were made available for sale. My friends and I arrived fashionably late around 1 PM to a standing room only bar and we were able to snag a couple bottles each of the last couple of hundred remaining bottles. (By 3 PM, all of the bottles were sold out.)
Curmudgeon's Better Half In A SnifterGetting our bottles was relatively painless via the new Founders Company Store. Finding a table and getting some food took a little bit longer, but was worth the wait while we sipped the newly released and delicious Curmudgeon's Better Half from 8 oz. Snifters as others chose to just sit on the floor around the stage area in lieu of waiting for a chair.

Curmudgeon's “Better Half” is a twist on mainstay Curmudgeon's old ale. Previously featured as a draft-only release under the name “Kaiser's Curmudgeon,” this version has been aged for 254 days in Maple Bourbon barrels giving it the sweeter character.

Founder's Beer Cheese Dip

We  sampled the excellent Beer Cheese Dip while waiting for some of the sandwiches the deli is famous for. I opted for the ultra spicy Devil Dancer featuring roasted chicken and a variety of hot peppers. This also gave me a chance to try another new brew, the very drinkable All Day IPA, which is also recently available in 6-packs throughout Michigan.

I plan on returning soon as the very highly rated Kentucky Breakfast Stout will be released in another month, and several more Backstage releases are promised in the near future; but this is also the kind of place you can just show up at anytime and there is bound to be something worthwhile going on. Here's to many more at Founders!
