Founders Brewing Co. loves to keep people guessing each year with their popular Backstage Series release, not revealing specifics as to which beer will be released or on what date until the last possible minute. The recipes often evolve from various taproom-only releases made available throughout the year and their new pilot small batch system has served as an incubator as of late for many of these new test-run brews. This year’s earlier release of Smoked Porter is an example. Also this year, the taproom featured a new series of “SpyPA” released which included such favorites as Sleeper Cell and Infiltrator leading up to and hinting at this year’s second Backstage Series release Dissenter.
Dissenter Imperial IPL (India Pale Lager) is a twist being the first lager release from Founders in a dozen years. Of course, Dissenter is no ordinary lager, being very aggressively hopped and higher gravity at 8.7% alcohol, making for a very intriguing “extreme” summer release. As was the case with this year’s prior Smoked Porter release, Founders opted not to use the pre-ticketed system and as of August 1, Dissenter is currently available on draft and in bottle at the pub ($12 per bottle) and with limited distribution outside the brewery.

While waiting for the next Backstage Series release to be announced (another is promised for later this year,) there are some other upcoming offerings in the works to whet the appetite and these include Mosaic Promise and Dark Penance. Mosaic Promise is a new single malt, single hop (SMaSH) ale which will be released in September as this year’s official beer of ArtPrize following last year’s popular Inspired Artist IPA, and Dark Penance is an Imperial Black IPA and is planned to be a new addition to the annual specialty release lineup for Founders and will debut in October of this year on draft and as a 4-pack bottles release with wide distribution.
