H.O.M.E. (House of Music & Entertainment) opened up on the main floor of the B.O.B. (Big Old Building) last year as a place to showcase live entertainment including jazz, rock, and blues with craft beer as well as the B.O.B.’s own Bourbon Bar. Recently, H.O.M.E. hosted a coffee, beer, and food pairing event called Strange Brew and I stopped by to check it out. The event started in the afternoon with presentations from Ferris Coffee’s Sam Mirto and a Q&A with Chef Mick RIckerd. The event also include live music from saxaphone and guitar duo Blue Train.

A Grand Pumpkin Tour of Grand Rapids, “Beer City USA”

If you enjoyed the Beer City Pale Ale promotion awhile back, 11 Grand Rapids area breweries have returned with the new Grand Pumpkin - and this time each one has something a little different to offer. Brewery Vivant and Harmony Brewing Company in Easttown have both participated. Harmony’s Grand Pumpkin is a 7.4% ABV Chai beer. Also on special here when I visited was the Goatoberfest pizza with sausage, goat cheese, basil, and pumpkin sauce. Perhaps you’ve heard of the White House honey ale? Harmony has brewed their own version “Ale to the Chief” and I can attest to the deliciousness. If you are out on 28th Street in Kentwood / Cascade area, you can check out Schmohz experimental Pumpkin Rye and Jaden James has their Pumpkin Ale on tap now also.

Lots on tap at B.O.B.'s Brewery in downtown Grand Rapids

The B.O.B. is a destination in and of itself; but maybe instead you are here for a concert at the Van Andel, visiting the local theater or perhaps one of many great local events such as ArtPrize or the Festival of the Arts. Maybe you are even here visiting one of the many exceptional breweries such as Founders or Hopcat. Whatever the reason, a visit to the Monkey Bar at this building's basement level serving as the home of B.O.B's brewery equals a guaranteed exceptional find in this city already renowned for it's exceptional taste in beer.
