handsome henry 2015 article

As the summer nears the end, Handsome Henry’s took the opportunity to do a special pizza and beer pairing event on their outdoor patio with music, schwag, and great brews from Rockford Brewing Co. The evening featured 6 different varieties of pizzas available with 6 different Rockford beers. The pizza was available at $10 for a flight including one slice of each with a pairing menu showcasing each of the Rockford Beers available in both 8 ounce and 16 ounce pours.

chefs table dinner

Handsome Henry’s in Muskegon recently hosted their first “Chef’s Table Beer and Wine Dinner Series” featuring a four-course meal paired with choice of beer selections from Spring Lake’s Odd Side Ales or wine from Chateau Grand Traverse Winery in Traverse City. I stopped by with a group of friends to check out the dinner which began with a sample appetizer of Teriyaki Wings. I chose the beer pairings and the first beer up was the Hop Gobbler Extra Pale which paired amazing with a Thai Noodle Soup that had a surprising ginger kick.

Brew House is located at 255 Seminole Dr. in the City of Norton Shores in Muskegon County conveniently right off the Seaway Drive / Business 31 on the way into town. The business was previously a coffee house but has been relaunched under new ownership and has recently expanded beyond traditional coffee drinks with the addition of a full bar with an emphasis on Michigan craft beer, wine, and spirits.

Handsome Henry’s recently held a release party launching the new Essence Summer Ale collaboration beer between Traverse City’s farm-based Brewery Terra Firma and Hoby Thrasher’s Muskegon-based restaurant collection. The 5.4% ABV Amber Ale was special designed with brewmaster John Niedermaier to be an refreshing, easy-drinking beer brewed with coriander and orange peel. The versatility of the beverage lends itself to beer-food pairings, cocktail blends, and even as an ingredient for special menu items. Head Chef and manager Cody Christensen of Handsome Henry’s took advantage of this to prepare a diverse menu of speciality items to showcasing the new beer for the event.

Brewery Terra Firma, Michigan’s first ever farm-based brewery, opened a little late in the year to take full advantage of the agricultural season. With their first full season just beginning, Muskegon’s Thrasher Collection in conjunction with Tyler Sales has embarked on a collaborative project with the brewery to provide their 4 restaurants being Hank’s, Handsome Henry’s, Hobo’s, and The Handsome Hobo with an exclusive new beer. The beer, described by brewmaster John Niedermaier as an “essence ale”, is a light but full-bodied beer with orange peel and coriander which should lend itself well to food pairings and even as cooking ingredient for specialty dishes.

Lights-Cover

I made the rounds in Muskegon again this year checking out Oberon wherever to be found as fresh as can be for the week following this year’s release. Buffalo Wild Wings once again tapped Oberon at midnight laying claim as one if not the first in town for those willing to stay up late on the Sunday preceding the wide release. Handsome Henry’s was close on their heels for a tapping early the next day.
