Recap of On the Rock Scotch Ale Tapping at Vitale's of Comstock Park

Muskegon is certainly carving out it’s place on the 2013 beer map. In addition to the previously announced Unruly Brewing Co., two more breweries have announced their intent to open this year, first Fetch Brewing in City of Whitehall, and most recently Pigeon Hill Brewing downtown. A primary incubator for much of this activity has been the MOB (Muskegon Ottawa Brewers) and has kept many of Muskegon’s local brewers a close knit community including participation in the annual Learn To Homebrew day. Two members of this group who are doing their part to keep Muskegon on everyone’s brewing radar are Russ Smith and Tim Borreson.

Hank’s Tavern celebrates Grand Opening with Founders’ Tap Takeover

Hank’s Tavern opened late last year and has been building quite a buzz with great food and amazing beer selection. The happy hour specials during the week featuring ½ off draft beers and free wings and meatballs have become regular attraction for many patrons. Other evening specials include ½ of Mexican fare on Mondays (including a newly expanded Mexican menu,) $2.00 draft beers on Tuesdays, and ½ bottles of wine on Wednesdays (which includes wines from Bell’s Brewery.) Also, nights at 10:00 PM is “Earth Hour.” Hank’s Tavern has also been building and expanding on their selection of craft beers with an emphasize on Michigan seasonals and specialties complemented with other great non-Michigan selections like New Belgium's Lips of Faith series.

Muskegon’s Inside the Mitten closes out 2nd year of Michigan Beer, Wine, & Music

Muskegon’s Watermark 920 closed out the 2nd year of their Inside the Mitten series with performances by Phoffman, Joe Sturgill, and Bob Buchanan. For those not familiar, the event keeps it local with Michigan musicians, beer, wine and local food and coffee vendors. Two-hearted ale was the draft selection of the night, whereas past previous have included Bell’s Octoberfest and Founders All Day IPA included among a variety of local bottled beer and wine.

Hank's Tavern in Muskegon

Veteran Restaurateur Hoby Thrasher promised something new for Muskegon with the new Hank’s Tavern, and on Saturday, December 1st he has delivered. The Henry / Sherman St. location is not new; Previous businesses at this location have included a bank and fast food pizza joint with the short-lived Bonfire restaurant being the most recent tenant. However, this time around Hoby has really outdone himself transforming the building which once felt small and cramped to an expansive and vibrant atmosphere which will be sure to impress anyone familiar with the building’s former occupants.

Unruly Brewing Comapny

Having announced their intention to open a brewery in Muskegon earlier this year, Unruly Brewing Co. has taken one step closer with this week’s announcement that a location has been determined. A brewery in Muskegon is long overdue, especially when you consider the close proximity to Grand Rapids (Beer City USA,) and also another great beer city Milwaukee via the Lake Express high-speed ferry.

Hennessy's Welcomes Hot Rod Power Tour with Michigan Craft Beer Tent

Downtown Muskegon launched into the month of June in tremendous fashion, with events including the 5th Annual Pub Pedal and the Hot Rod Power Tour, and again Hennessy’s has proven itself as the premier focal point for Michigan Beer with their 3-day craft beer tent in Muskegon’s downtown.

Vander Mill launches Rewards Days and new menu with kick off party

Vander Mill Cidery held a rewards kick off party on Saturday, May 12th. Don't have a rewards card? No problem, because Vander Mill went well out of their way to hook everyone up with food, fun, and discounted cider and merchandise. And yes, the new beers debuted earlier this year were readily available on tap (along with a variety of hard ciders.) This event was the first of several planned “rewards days,” and also served as the inaugural sign-up day for future events.

Hennessy's, in conjunction with Saugatuck Brewing Co., has also brought a new Irish Stout to the Muskegon Market

West Michigan has a solid Irish Stout connection that no one can dispute. Decades ago, Guinness beer was actually brewed right in Muskegon. Founded in 2000, Muskegon is also home to Michigan Irish Music Festival, held in September of each year. A few years ago, and in conjunction with this festival, Schell's of Minnesota introduced "Irish Fest Stout" and rolled it out to tap rooms across Muskegon as well.

TopShelf Pizza & Pub is Muskegon's Best Kept-Secret!

Could TopShelf Pizza & Pub be Muskegon's best kept-secret? Located on a side street off from Apple Ave, (look for the sign!) it could be easy to miss from the main street. However, barely three months into the year, they've already been through enough Founders' beer to earn them a reputation as "Founders' West." Personally, I count at least 2 tappings of Better Half, in addition to multiple kegs of Red's Rye, Double Trouble, and Porter as well as an undisclosed amount of bottles of Kentucky Breakfast Stout, at a minimum; and I've not been keeping track.
