The People's Cider Company Batch #1 debuts at Hopcat and Georgio's in Downtown Grand Rapids

The Peoples Cider Co. very recently has started previewing their European-style dry cider at local Grand Rapids bars and restaurants, and I took advantage of the opportunity to meet up with owner Jason Lummen at the near-downtown cider making facility and talk about the new and exciting venture. For those looking for something a little different from the many sweeter tasting hard ciders that seem most abundant in the American market, Jason has been working on and developing his own brand of dry cider since his very first batch back in 2002. Recently obtaining a small winemaker’s license has allowed him the luxury and freedom to begin distributing at a much earlier stage than what it would take a small brewery to reach the same levels.
Another key to The Peoples Cider Co.’s approach is the use of locally sourced ingredients in the recipes. Similar to what the hugely successful local craft beer scene has recognized is that fresher and local translates to a superior product all-round. The P.C. Co.’s apples for the ciders are sourced from the nearby Grand Rapids’ Hill Bros Orchards. Being a relatively small-scale operation, the primary current focus is supplying nearby bars and restaurants with outstanding hard cider. A tap room is a possibility in the future, but don’t expect to find a bottled product on store shelves anytime soon.

Start looking for The Peoples Cider Co. signature hand-crafted tap handles at your local Grand Rapids bars and restaurants soon. Batch #1, a bourbon barrel aged 6.9% ABV apple cider, recently debuted as a last minute addition to Hopcat’s “Cider Fest” on March 23rd alongside ciders from Vander Mill,

Black Star Farms, Sietsema Orchards, Tandem Ciders and Uncle John’s Cider Mill. The cider is also currently on tap at the nearby Georgio’s Pizza on Ionia in downtown Grand Rapids. More batches are on the way including an Imperial strength cider approaching 15% ABV so be sure to keep an eye out and request at your favorite local drinking establishment.
