Short's Brewing Company

Heading north this summer and looking for some great Michigan craft beer? Take the time to stop by Bellaire, Michigan.

You won’t find the Fresh Prince or Jazzy Jeff here, but Bellaire, Michigan has something even better-- Short’s Brewing Company! They are known for unique beers like Hanging Frank and Soft Parade.

Short’s Brewing Company’s mission statement is “the process of appreciation through education we call beer liberation.” And Short’s doesn’t mean liberating the beer—they mean liberating folks from boring beer, and bringing quality handcrafted beer back to the people.

The fun doesn’t stop there either, Short’s also features plenty of food—they bill themselves as a “gourmet deli” and serve some tasty sandwiches with interesting names, including the Where’d the Cheese Go and Sketches of Winkle. Not in the mood for a sandwich? Appetizers and pizza are also available—and they all go great with a cold draft of a Short’s beer.

While the food is great, the real magic is in the beer. Short’s offers plenty of drafts, which you will spot right away thanks to the array of taps behind the bar, each with a different name. Want to take some beer with you? Short’s offers growlers, and if you can’t decide, order a flight of several different beers to sample.

If you are serious about your love of Short’s Brewing Company, you can join their Mug Club. You get your own 22o to 24oz handmade ceramic mug to drink out of whenever you visit, as well as deals on drafts and merchandise. You will have to wait a bit though, as there are about 275 people on the waiting list. Now there’s some serious beer fans.

How did Short’s get its start? According to Beer Liberator Jon Wojtowicz, after years of working for other breweries, Joe Shorts decided he wanted to go out on his own. Joe wanted the creative freedom to create his own handcrafted beer the way he wanted it brewed. Short’s Brewing Company became incorporated in 2002, and a location was found in 2003—an old hardware store in downtown Bellaire.

By late April 2004, Short’s Brewing Company opened its doors to the public and began to “invest in the customer.” Jon says the goal of Short’s, for both the pub and beer, is to create an experience which makes people want to come back. You won’t have a difficult time wanting to come back after trying a Short’s beer or their food.

Plan a road trip to Lake Michigan this summer and head over to Bellaire to pay a visit to Short’s Brewing Company along the way.
