 WGRD Summer Craft Brew Festival returns to John Ball Park Zoo Saturday August 17th

If you’d like to know what the WGRD Summer Beer Fest is all about, below is newly released I’m a Beer Hound recap of the 2012 event. Note this year’s festival is $30 but includes 15 drink tickets - a better deal overall compared to last year if you do the math. Over 20 breweries will be featured including several new from last year - see above link for current list.  Grand Rapids’ Harmony Brewing Launches Hyper-Local Lunch Menu

Harmony Brewing Company is set to expand their already very successful wood fired pizza focused menu with new lunch options. The new lunch menu will feature sandwiches toasted in the wood fired oven and generously portioned creative salad options. Lunch will be available starting on August 1. Harmony will be opening an hour earlier, at 11am to accommodate the new lunch crowd. These will be the new hours going forward.

 Cranker’s Brewery celebrates one year of beer and expands into Grand Rapids

Billed as an “eclectic eatery,” Cranker’s Coney Island’s menu features an impressive array of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert food, but is now well known for their beers as well. In fact, the Big Rapids location recently celebrated their one year anniversary as a brewery. Having seen sales quadruple at this location, Cranker’s has now begun expanding the brewing component to it’s other locations and the “Beer City” Grand Rapids location is the first to get the makeover.

Recap of Big Brew at the Calder Plaza

Homebrew Day has been designated on May 7th as a national holiday since 1988. The AHA (American Homebrewers Association) has selected 1st Saturday in May of each year to celebrate with a series “Big Brew” homebrew events throughout the U.S. This year, local homebrew and specialty store Siciliano’s Market stepped up to the plate and sponsored one in the Grand Rapids area. The event was held at downtown’s Calder Plaza, a very public location in close proximity to the City, County, and Federal buildings.

Recap of Sixth Annual Founders Fest Celebration

This year Founders featured a slightly reconfigured celebration to accommodate the ongoing construction at the brewery but no worries as all the key Founders Fest element were back: two alternating stages of continuous music, a premier selection of area food trucks, and of course beer tents including a tent of mainstays (and yes, Founders Fest Wheat,) as well as a speciality tent featuring half-pours of specialty brews and/or full pours from speciality firkins.

New Belgium Brewing’s Clips Beer & Film Tour Raised More Than $13,500 in Grand Rapids

Local film and beer enthusiasts enjoyed an evening outdoors while raising money for the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition
Under the Solstice Supermoon, New Belgium Brewing’s Clips Beer & Film Tour raised more than $13,500 for the Greater Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition on Friday, June 21. About 1,000 people came out to Ah-Nab-Awen Park to sample beers and enjoy films.

ecap of Founders Doom Release and Black Party

The line started early for this year’s 12th annual Founder Black Party. The $10 admission fee included a commemorative mug and a pint of any tier 1 release beer. A lineup of classic Founders dark beers was available all day along including but not limited to KBS, Breakfast and Imperial Stouts, and Porter. Bands performed throughout the day including Oracle, Love Fossil, Mintboone, and Hundo. The deli was also serving a special Black-themed release just for the event: A blackened chicken sandwich tossed with Breakfast Stout and garlic with blackberry aioli.

Grand Rapids -2013 Beer City USA

Michigan is starting craft beer out with a bang with competition among Michigan cities inciting some of the highest vote getters in last week’s Beer City USA polling. Grand Rapids, which tied for 1st place last year alongside Asheville, North Carolina, this year took exclusive rights to the title getting over twice as many votes as any other nominated city. Kalamazoo took 2nd place, with Asheville slipping to 3rd, cementing Michigan’s reputation as The Great Beer State. The only other Michigan city to be nominated, Ann Arbor, rounded off the top 4.

Pure Michigan is building on its regional warm weather advertising campaign, launched last week, with a new radio ad showcasing Michigan’s craft beer offerings.
