Saison was born in the 1700s in the Belgian countryside and finds its roots as quite a few other regional styles of beer do: necessity. The water available in the region wasn't suitable for consumption, and by the miracle of fermentation, the water was made drinkable. The beer also doubled as compensation for farm workers, to the tune of 5 litres per day.

Coming Soon Griffin Claw Brewing Company

Two blocks south of the Big Rock Chop House in Birmingham, a glorious 12,000 square foot glass-enclosed structure is arising, though not from the ashes like the mythical phoenix. This new edifice will soon house the entirely unmythical Griffin Claw Brewing Company, the new home of Big Rock’s former brewing operation. Recently, owners Norm & Bonnie LePage and well-known and oft-awarded brewer Dan Rogers hosted a tour of the nascent facility, and it was truly inspiring.

Motor City Brew Tours at Big Rock Chophouse

We met Stephen Johnson the owner of Motor City Brew Tours a couple months ago at the bloggers dinner we went to at Frankenmuth Brewing Company. After hearing about his tours we were very anxious to check one out. Imagine my excitement when I saw on Facebook that they were hosting a tour on my birthday!! I couldn’t think of any place I would rather be on my 31st birthday than on a bus with other beer enthusiests touring a few of the many Detroit breweries. I immediately called Paul to tell him what I had seen. He very calmly replies “I already got tickets” he knows me so well!
