In the very near future, Grandville and the neighboring cities of Jenison and Wyoming will get their first brewery. Osgood Brewing owners Ron and Mindy Denning are working on the finishing touches and hope to be open before the end of August. Whether they reach the goal of that time or not, there’s still a great place for beer lovers to look forward to.

Founders Brewing Company celebrated their 15th anniversary party this past Saturday and did so in fantastic, fermented fashion. With doors opening at 11AM came the first tapping of Bolt Cutter, their 15th Anniversary Barley Wine, brewed to commemorate this milestone. Before Saturday, those with tickets could come in and buy two bottles and a special 15th Anniversary glass on one of the six days leading up to the party. In addition to Bolt Cutter, several mainstays and seasonals, they also introduced us to Boilermaker: a bourbon barrel aged version of Solid Gold. It tasted much better than your typical ale with a shot of whiskey dropped in…and you didn’t have to slam it. And around 1PM, they tapped a firkin of double chocolate, double coffee Breakfast Stout, which was excellent!

On October 13th, the Grand Rapids Public Museum officially opened a fabulous and unique exhibit called “Thank You, BEER”. Mostly focusing on Michigan brewing, especially the Grand Rapids area, “Thank You, BEER” is collection of items and stories that show just how much beer has done for the West Michigan area. Even to those already knowing a lot of the history of beer in this area will be pleasantly surprised as to what this exhibit has to offer.

When it comes to writing an article like this, I’m usually focused on something in the Grand Rapids area, but after a random stop at Willow Mercantile this summer, I had to take the time to take some pictures and highlight them in an article. What a great place!

Recently, Michigan Beer Cellar celebrated their second anniversary and I had the privilege of being there to taste some of their beers. It wasn't my first time tasting their beer, but it was my first time visiting the brewery...and I'm glad I did.

This summer the Greater Grand Rapids area will have another brewery for beer lovers to quench their thirst at: Perrin Brewing Company. Even though they’re not open yet, they had a special “First Drip” tapping last week of their Vanilla Porter at Hopcat in downtown Grand Rapids. I’ve been to Hopcat when it’s busy and slow. On a Tuesday evening they usually draw a decent crowd thanks to their half off beer special starting at 6pm, but last Tuesday was something special.

Last week, Brewery Vivant once again tapped an old favorite: Big Red Coq, a “Hoppy Belgo-American Red Ale”. It feels weird saying “old favorite” when referencing something from a brewery that’s less than two years old, but…it seems they have at least one beer and hundreds, if not thousands of followers that make those words good to use.

Once again the popularity of Founders Brewing Company drew enough people to form a line outside that seemed to last throughout the day. Last time it was the release of KBS and this time it was their 11th Annual Black Party; a day where they do a tap take-over on themselves making 14 of 16 beers on tap black, seven of which were just for the Black Party.
