It’s no secret that Arbor Brewing’s founders Matt and Rene Greff came out of Michigan’s thriving homebrewing scene. And today, with more than two decades in the commercial brewing industry, they still pay homage to their roots with Rat Fest, an annual event featuring dozens of beers created by area homebrewing clubs.
This Saturday, August 13th from 3pm to 8pm is Beerfest on the Bridge, presented by the Portland Michigan Main Street Program. The Festival is hosted on Veterans Memorial Bridge in downtown Portland. Built in 1890, the bridge is the oldest known surviving example of a truss bridge in Michigan and it creates an attractive and historic entrance into main street in the 'City of Two Rivers'.
When Arbor Brewing Company (ABC) opened our doors in July 1995, there were only 7 breweries in Michigan. 20 years later, as we put this finishing touches on our anniversary celebration, the number has swelled to nearly 200 and craft beer, once a niche product, has become an international sensation.

Saison was born in the 1700s in the Belgian countryside and finds its roots as quite a few other regional styles of beer do: necessity. The water available in the region wasn't suitable for consumption, and by the miracle of fermentation, the water was made drinkable. The beer also doubled as compensation for farm workers, to the tune of 5 litres per day.
Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery is launching a crowdfunding campaign to provide its kitchen with much needed repairs and renovations. The campaign needs to raise a minimum of $75,000 to keep the kitchen open this winter but the brewery hopes to raise $125,000 for a complete overhaul.
