With even Starbucks across the nation now getting in on beer and wine, the coffee house and pub concept has been gaining in popularity. EB Coffee and Pub in Caledonia is one step ahead of the game, launching Michigan’s first ever brewery as part of the Essential Bean Coffee House. I made my first visit on a Saturday afternoon, a few weeks after the opening, and the beer was very popular with the weekend crowd.

Pairing a tropical theme along with Michigan and other craft beer selections, Mango’s Bar & Grille has remained a staple of Muskegon’s Lakeside now for many years. The restaurant has recently doubled their draft selection from 6 taps to 12 taps with an emphasis local and Michigan beers. The expanded selection has allowed Mango’s to be one of the first restaurants in the area to include both of Muskegon’s new breweries Unruly & Pigeon Hill on tap at the same time. Other Michigan favorites such as Perrin, Odd Side Ales, Founders and Bell’s are currently prominently featured as well as non-Michigan craft breweries such as New Belgium.

Stella’s Lounge will celebrate four years as one of Grand Rapids’ favorite watering holes on Thursday May 8 by offering its famous giant stuffed burgers for only $4 along with special draft releases and the opening of a hard-to-find bottle of Old Rip Van Winkle bourbon.

Broad Ripple, 6280 N. College Ave., across from the historic Vogue Theatre, will be the third location for the award-winning HopCat, which was named the No. 3 Beer Bar on Planet Earth by Beer Advocate. The draft system will be the largest in the city with many of its taps dedicated to supporting Indiana’s craft brewing industry, as well as craft beers from around the country and the world.

Barley, hops, yeast, and water. These four ingredients all play a pivotal if not essential roles in the beverage we all know and love as beer. Of the four, water may be the most often overlooked and taken for granted. While each ingredient plays a key role in the brewing process, any good brewmaster will tell you that a great beer is nothing without good water as a foundation to build upon. Michigan would certainly not be the great beer State that it is without being blessed with the abundance of great drinking water that our Great Lakes provide.
