In 1990, downtown Holland was quite different than the sprawling success it is today. Many buildings lacked tenants and were in need of renovation, and some business owners took it upon themselves to help reinvigorate the area.

In 2000, Tim and Sue Bies eyed a brick-and-sandstone building at Oak and Sixth Streets in Calumet with dreams of opening the Michigan House Café and Brew Pub – a combination of the building’s roots as a restaurant and brewery in the western Upper Peninsula.

 

The Beer Grotto, a new-concept beer and wine bar and retail shop, that opened last Wednesday to a full house packed into 8059 Main St. in Dexter. The 3,000 sq. ft. space, formerly occupied by the Dexter Pharmacy, encompasses a merchandise area featuring wine and beer bottles, apparel, glassware, books, and more as well as a lounge space with a multitap bar, light snacks, and seating for a few dozen customers.

Smash Wine Bar is just one of many new additions to Muskegon’s downtown this summer. The past year has seen the opening of not one but two new breweries, a proposed distillery, and a newly revamped farmer’s market. While the focus of Smash in on their incredible selection of wines from around the world, the food menu features salads, sandwiches and pizzas with an emphasis on locally-sourced an ingredients, and the full bar includes 4 taps of all Michigan beers as well as speciality cocktails and martinis.

After an excruciating battle with traffic, I was rewarded for my patience by attending the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange for a special event featuring Kelly St. Louis from The Cheese Lady and Mitch Steele, the head brewer from Stone Brewing Company. During this particular evening at the Exchange, attendees and I enjoyed 7 courses of finely paired beers and cheeses.
